The dairy in Middleton, Michigan, is part of a large-scale operation owned and operated by a dairy farming family who immigrated to the U.S. from Belgium in 1999.

What began with 35 cows has grown into four major dairy farms across Michigan, milking approximately 13,000 cows and farming 1,800 acres of corn, 700 acres of hay, and 200 acres of wheat.

In 2020, this family aspired to take their sustainability practices further by integrating renewable energy production into their operations. The result is a large-scale renewable natural gas (RNG) facility located at their Middleton dairy.

This initiative supports their broader vision of creating a circular agricultural economy — one where waste is recycled into clean energy, and long-term environmental impact is reduced.

To bring this vision to life, they needed high-performance, scalable anaerobic digester infrastructure.

Balmoral Tanks partnered with SKS Green to provide reliable tank solutions designed for long-term success.

The facility began with the installation of a single 3-million-gallon Fusion Bonded Epoxy tank with a stainless steel roof. Following the success of the first installation, a second tank was added to expand capacity.

The third phase of the project concluded with the installation of two additional 3-million-gallon Fusion Bonded Epoxy tanks with Epoxy Coated Steel Roofs.

The site produces approximately 250,000 MMBTU of RNG annually, making it a significant contributor to Michigan’s renewable energy sector.
