Project case study
Corrosion-resistant water storage delivered for coastal power station
The Challenge
Our team were challenged with supplying three water storage tanks for a new power station in Ireland. Two demineralised water tanks and one fire and raw water tank were designed, manufactured and delivered to support the project.
The new plant will run on sustainable biofuels, providing reliable backup generation to support Ireland’s energy security and decarbonisation goals. The site was positioned on the coast, placing it within a highly corrosive environment with constant exposure to aggressive marine conditions.
Therefore stringent coating and quality control standards were required for a successful outcome, ensuring the tanks would achieve their required design life.
The project also ran to a demanding schedule, with strict programme milestones, comprehensive quality documentation and regular quality assurance reviews required throughout.
Clear and consistent communication with the client was essential at every stage.
Our Solution
To overcome the challenges on site, our team provided a fully integrated solution across design, manufacture and delivery, with a coating system chosen specifically for the coastal location.
A high-performance Epoxy EfusiOn 1500 coating was applied to the tank shell, roof and angles, while the wind stiffeners and roof hub were hot-dip galvanised to a specification suitable to the coastal environment.
Together, these protective systems gave the tanks enhanced corrosion resistance and long-term protection. To keep the programme on track, the team maintained open communication with the client and provided regular progress updates.
Our team also introduced the client to a trusted tank installation contractor, which helped to accelerate activities on site. Comprehensive quality documentation was provided throughout, giving the client full visibility at every stage.
As a result, the programme remained on track, and the client received three fully compliant tanks built to withstand the demands of the coastal site.
Conclusion
Despite the demands of a tight programme and a harsh coastal environment, Balmoral Tanks delivered this project successfully and to a high standard.
The result is a durable, long-lasting water storage solution for a power station that will play an important role in Ireland’s energy future, and this project demonstrates Balmoral Tanks’ commitment to quality and to meeting our client needs.
